Day 90 - Cotton Bale

Well darn, I've missed two more days - but I was just too tired to do anything. Saturday was a travel day - it takes a long time to get from California back to the deep south. I finally arrived in Tennessee at 8:30PM Saturday night - spent that night and Sunday night at my daughter's in Tennessee and drove home today. I was totally wiped out yesterday.

Saw these cotton bales on my way home from Tennessee today. Not sure if they were before I crossed the state line or not, but pretty close either way. Don't see them much anymore, and the cotton picking machines leave so much waste cotton in the fields... sure not like having them picked by hand - but then no one wants to do that anymore.

Day 44 - What is that stuff on my windshield

....could it actually be rain???? I'd almost forgotten how it looks - WONDERFUL!!!

Driving in the rain isn't my favorite - but it was a blessing today - along with a good report from my Oncologist!!! :)

Day 43 - Georgia Mtn Volunteer Fire Dept

This is the local volunteer fire department - I can almost see it from my house.

Guntersville has a paid department, but there are many volunteer departments around the county who make a major contribution to fire safety.

Day 35 - Humidity on the lake

This photo is not because of the camera - it's the humidity :) This was taken as we drove into town yesterday... and it's how it looks much of the time. Our lovely views are not clear and bright, but hazy with humidity. And this was a nice sunny day. Things close around you are crisp and clear - but the distance views are almost always hazy. It's amazing that I got the nice clear photo that I've used at the top of the blog.... it's always such a nice surprise when the humidity is lower and the views brighter.

Day 32 - Georgia Mtn Community Center

Are you impressed? I can see this little building from my house - and it's my polling place for elections. Spiffy huh!!

Day 31 - local hospital

Wanted to get an early start today as my dd and grandson are coming today for a visit.... and since I haven't missed a day yet (hint to some other 365ers) didn't want to start now.

This is our local hospital - about 5 miles from my house. Couldn't get a really good shot because of the big trees (but I love the trees). It's a 'rural' hospital, actually between two towns and services the north part of the county. 80+ beds I think. However, my hospital stays and cancer treatments in the last couple of years have been in Huntsville (35 miles away).

Day 26 - My parents house

Though they've both been gone for years, I still think of this as their house. They built it and we moved in when I was 12 (that's almost another lifetime ago).

My mother watched every nail that went in and if she didn't like it, they took it out and fixed it to her satisfaction. Needless to say, she wasn't real popular with the contractor.

It didn't look quite like this when it was first built. It's been added to and spiffed up a bit. But trust me, it's probably the best built house in Marshall County.

Fortunately I have WONDERFUL people living in it now (though that wasn't always the case) and it's well kept and always looks good.

Day 24 - Goats

The white one is "Casper" and is my only male at the moment (thank you God).

And this is "Sweetie". She's an old lady at 12 years old. I bottle raised her as her mother rejected her - so she's still spoiled rotten. She's also the main boss lady - ALL the others do what she tells them.

Day 23 - View from my back yard

I've been working inside most of the day so dashed outside to take this photo. It's one of the views from my back yard - looking toward the side actually. There's a road just beyond the fence and then another field. Lots of green in the summertime.

Day 22 - My geese

Meet "Duke & Duchess". They are Canadian geese who think they own the place.
I gave them to Chuck for Christmas the first year we had the pond - their wings had been permanently clipped so they cannot fly, however, they roam my entire field/pasture.

Unfortunately, their pond has dried up in the last two years since this has become the desert southeast - SO, I had to get two kiddie swimming pools for them. The geese make a terrible mess in them and they are not easy to try and clean. They've raised babies every year and most of them stayed around till the draught - now I'm just back to two (which is fine with me).



It's funny to watch them when I feed the goats - they'll go up behind a goat and bite/pull the hair on the back of a leg - goat moves out of their way.

Day 18 - Walking Trail

This is one of three walking trails in town - two are along the water's edge with gorgeous views, the other is the levee that I've already posted. This one is 3-1/2 miles (round trip) and there are benches, picnic tables and parking areas all along it. Really a lovely walk.

Day 3 - drive down Georgia Mtn

This is the lovely drive down the mountain when I go into town. It's a really crooked road that was built in the late 1800s for mules pulling wagons, finally paved in the 1960s with only one curve removed. Still really narrow, with the right side rising sharply and the left side dropping even more sharply. They did add a guard rail a few years ago. Some of my local friends still won't drive this route (there's another, longer way up the mountain) but it's the road I learned to drive on (though a dirt road them) and I love it!!

Day 1 - Map

Scenic Guntersville is actually a penisula in the Tennessee River - surrounded on 3 sides by water. Now, I don't actually live IN Guntersville but that's my address. This is an incredibly scenic area with the lake and mountains and southern hospitality - what more could you ask.
