Plus Day 162 - Old Citizens Bank Building

This lovely old building is downtown and was actually a bank when I was growing up. Then it encountered some sad times. A young couple finally bought it and re-did it. I understand now there are offices on the ground floor and they live on the 2nd floor.

I love old buildings and am so pleased when people restore them instead of tearing them down.

Day 136 - Snow in Alabama (1st-25 days of Christmas)

I love Christmas decorations - and had decided to start today posting the 25 days of Christmas decorations. Since I'm in Alabama - my snow qualifies!!!

It's COLD in Alabama - and there was a dusting of snow when I got up this morning. Didn't last long, but it's snow!!! I've gotten tired of sweeping the leaves off my deck and it looked kinda strange with the leaves and snow. Little elephant plant stand looks kinda lonely doesn't he.

Day 96 - Rock Mt. Church

A little country Baptist church just down the road from my own church - out in the country.

Day 79 - Propane tanks

Had to go to the gas company this morning and was struck by all the bright shiny propane tanks - just ready for wintertime I guess. Mine at home isn't nearly that bright.

Day 78 - Chicken Houses

Alabama is chicken raising country - the above picture is just two of the many that are less than a mile from my house. They're big giant buildings - I couldn't get far enough away from them to even get the three that sit right together in the same photo.

In the hot summertime there are huge fans blowing in the front openings.

The bottom photo is the "poop barn" - it probably has another name, but that's what it is. When they clean out the barns (with a backhoe, bulldozer, or whatever) they can't just leave it sitting out in the 'open' like they used to. It has to be IN a barn - hence the poop barn. It's actually quite close to the chicken houses - just a little off to the right of the top photo.

Day 76 - Yard Ornaments Anyone?

You really must enlarge this photo to truly appreciate it. This is a little house that someone lives in - he obviously makes and sells yard ornaments (but I have no idea who buys them). You never know what you'll see when you pass here.

Day 71 - Chamber of Commerce

Posted the sign yesterday, today's the building. It sits to the right just as you come off the causeway from the river bridge.

Day 70 - Chamber sign

Not a very exciting day in the photo department. This is the sign in front of our Chamber of Commerce.

Day 32 - Georgia Mtn Community Center

Are you impressed? I can see this little building from my house - and it's my polling place for elections. Spiffy huh!!

Day 31 - local hospital

Wanted to get an early start today as my dd and grandson are coming today for a visit.... and since I haven't missed a day yet (hint to some other 365ers) didn't want to start now.

This is our local hospital - about 5 miles from my house. Couldn't get a really good shot because of the big trees (but I love the trees). It's a 'rural' hospital, actually between two towns and services the north part of the county. 80+ beds I think. However, my hospital stays and cancer treatments in the last couple of years have been in Huntsville (35 miles away).

Day 26 - My parents house

Though they've both been gone for years, I still think of this as their house. They built it and we moved in when I was 12 (that's almost another lifetime ago).

My mother watched every nail that went in and if she didn't like it, they took it out and fixed it to her satisfaction. Needless to say, she wasn't real popular with the contractor.

It didn't look quite like this when it was first built. It's been added to and spiffed up a bit. But trust me, it's probably the best built house in Marshall County.

Fortunately I have WONDERFUL people living in it now (though that wasn't always the case) and it's well kept and always looks good.

Day 9 - view from the "Dock"

Almost too tired to post today, good thing I already had a couple of photos. I've been at the hospital all day with a friend (and her family) who had a double knee replacement. LONG day.

Anyway, this photo was taken from the dock that I walked out on to see the floating condos. It's looking back toward the shore and our new (and wonderful) Wentzels Oyster House.

Day 7 - Herron

Stopped to take some photos of the floating condos (I'll use them tomorrow) and as I was walking back on the dock there was this herron - just standing there. I walked up to about five feet from him before he decided to fly. He, of course, was looking for brunch.

We used to have them come to the pond (before we turned into the desert southeast and the pond dried up) almost daily. Definitely didn't like them at the pond - they can eat an incredible amount of fish, and they're very good at catching them.

Day 5 - Tiny baby Lizard

Actually, I think the photo is bigger than this baby lizard was. I was watering the plants on my deck - this is a hanging spider plant - saw something move and this tiny, tiny baby lizard was on one of the leaves. I don't think he was a full inch long. He was patient for me to run and get the camera and quite cooperative for me to take pictures.

Day 3 - drive down Georgia Mtn

This is the lovely drive down the mountain when I go into town. It's a really crooked road that was built in the late 1800s for mules pulling wagons, finally paved in the 1960s with only one curve removed. Still really narrow, with the right side rising sharply and the left side dropping even more sharply. They did add a guard rail a few years ago. Some of my local friends still won't drive this route (there's another, longer way up the mountain) but it's the road I learned to drive on (though a dirt road them) and I love it!!
