This is the local volunteer fire department - I can almost see it from my house.
Guntersville has a paid department, but there are many volunteer departments around the county who make a major contribution to fire safety.

This is what a lot of our fire depts look like here in SW VA.
Our town had a little paid dept, but 90% of the fire fighters are volunteer. Both the EMT and the fire/rescue folks get paid $10 per run (to cover gas, which nowadays is enough to get them to the end of their driveway).
That's better than ours - they get nothing - and the fire departments have to really work to scrimp by - always fundraisers of some kind.
